Chatham Borough (07928) is located in Morris County, NJ. The community has a total area of 2.5 square miles and has approximately 3,200 housing units. The Borough has a downtown center located along Main Street with specialty shops and restaurants. The Chatham Train Station is also located downtown and is within walking distance for most residents. The train station offers an easy commute to NYC which makes Chatham real estate very desirable. Most of the homes and neighborhoods in the Borough were established prior to the 1960s. Many of the homes are situated on compact property lots and feature old world charm. Beautiful victorian and colonial homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s are common. In recent years, builders have found it profitable to knock-down and replace older ranch and cape homes with high-end new construction. In 2005, Chatham Borough was recognized by Money Magazine as one of the "Best Places to Live" in the United States, ranked 9th. Chatham Borough and Chatham Township have a joint school district and are commonly referred to as The Chathams.
Residents have easy access to NJ Route 24 which connects to Interstate 78 for an eastbound commute. The Chatham Borough Train Station offers direct service to Hoboken or NY Penn Station on the NJ Transit Morristown Line. Passengers who take the Hoboken train can switch to the PATH to reach NYC. Passengers who take the Midtown Direct train will arrive at NY Penn Station in about 40 minutes. Passengers can transfer at Newark Broad Street or Summit to reach the other destination if necessary.
The Chatham School District is a regional public school district serving the students of Chatham Borough and Chatham Township for grades K through 12. There are 3 primary schools (K-3) Milton Avenue, Southern Boulevard, and Washington Avenue School. Lafayette School is for grade 4 and 5. Chatham Middle School serves grades 6-8 and Chatham High School serves students in grades 9-12.
Chatham Recreation is a joint venture between Chatham Township and Chatham Borough and offers a variety or programs and activities for its residents which include indoor and outdoor sports, band, and teen activities. Colony Pool is located in Chatham Township and is open for membership to its residents and the surrounding towns. It has a sand bottom pool, six tennis courts, a playground and a full snack bar. Chatham Borough has a municipal swimming pool which is located at Memorial Park and is open to residents only.
Chatham Borough has a charming downtown with shops and restaurants. Large national chain stores are located along NJ Route 10 in East Hanover. Residents can easily drive to the Short Hills Mall and Livingston Mall. The towns of Summit, New Providence, Madison, and Morristown offer downtown shopping.
